Shoes

  • Soft Shoes (Ghillies/Reel Shoes)

Beginner shoes: Ghillies (for girls) are a lace-up leather shoe with a flexible sole.

Boys: Reel shoes are the male equivalent, often with a fiberglass heel to create a sound when clicking together.

Function: Soft shoes are designed for lighter, more fluid movements and are worn for dances like jigs and reels.

Fit: Soft shoes should have a snug fit, as they may stretch slightly with wear.

  • Hard Shoes (Jig Shoes)

Advanced: Once a dancer masters the basics, they may progress to hard shoes.

Features: These shoes have a heavier leather, a fiberglass tip and heel for a louder sound, and a lace-up or ankle strap.

Function: Hard shoes are worn for dances like hornpipes, set dances, and treble reels, which involve more forceful and rhythmic movements.
